Building a Data Strategy That Delivers Business Value
Many organisations have more data than ever and still struggle to answer simple questions: which customers are most profitable, which sites underperform, where costs are leaking. A data strategy closes that gap by deciding what data matters, who owns it and how it will be used.
Start with decisions, not tools
List the decisions leaders make every month and the questions they cannot answer confidently today. Those questions define the use cases, and the use cases define the data you need — not the other way round.
Components of a practical data strategy
- Use-case portfolio: prioritised by value and feasibility.
- Data inventory: where key data lives, its quality and its owner.
- Governance: definitions, ownership, access rules and quality standards.
- Architecture: how data is collected, stored, integrated and served.
- People and skills: who builds, maintains and uses the analytics.
- Compliance: privacy obligations, including the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
Deliver in increments
Pick one or two high-value use cases and deliver them end to end within a few months. Early wins build trust and funding for the broader programme far more effectively than a multi-year plan on paper.
Measure maturity
Track progress with simple indicators: share of decisions supported by trusted reports, data-quality scores for key entities and time taken to answer new questions.
