Data Centre Installation Checklist: From Empty Room to Go-Live
A well-built data centre or server room is quiet, cool, labelled and boring — exactly what you want. Getting there requires coordination across civil work, electrical, cooling, cabling and IT. Here is a practical checklist.
1. Plan capacity and layout
- Estimate rack count, power per rack and growth for at least three to five years.
- Plan hot-aisle/cold-aisle orientation and clearances for maintenance.
- Decide cable routes: overhead trays or raised floor.
2. Power and cooling
- Dual power feeds per rack where possible, with UPS sized for the load and runtime required.
- Generator integration and changeover testing.
- Precision cooling sized for the heat load, with redundancy for critical rooms.
- Proper earthing and surge protection.
3. Structured cabling
Use standards-based copper and fibre with patch panels, consistent colour coding and labelling at both ends. Leave spare capacity — re-pulling cables later is far more expensive.
4. Rack, stack and connect
Mount equipment according to weight and airflow, use blanking panels, and route power and data cables separately with tidy management.
5. Test and commission
- Certify cabling with test reports.
- Test UPS failover, generator start and cooling redundancy.
- Verify monitoring for temperature, humidity, power and door access.
6. Document and hand over
Rack elevations, port maps, cable schedules and as-built drawings turn a working room into a maintainable one.
