Designing a Network Architecture That Scales With Your Business

Designing a Network Architecture That Scales With Your Business

A good network architecture is not the one with the most advanced equipment. It is the one that meets today’s needs, grows without redesign and can be operated by your team at 3 a.m. during an outage.

Design principles

  • Hierarchy: separate access, distribution and core layers (or a collapsed core for smaller sites) so problems stay contained.
  • Redundancy where it counts: dual uplinks, redundant core devices and diverse WAN paths for critical sites.
  • Standardisation: a small number of device models and configuration templates reduces errors.
  • Security built in: segmentation, management-plane protection and logging from day one.
  • Observability: design monitoring and flow export into the architecture, not as an afterthought.

WAN choices

Multi-site organisations increasingly combine MPLS, broadband and 4G/5G links under SD-WAN to balance cost and resilience. The right mix depends on application sensitivity, site criticality and local connectivity options.

IP addressing and routing

A clean, hierarchical IP plan with room for growth makes routing summarisation, firewall rules and troubleshooting dramatically easier. Plan IPv6 alongside IPv4 rather than retrofitting it later.

Documentation is part of the design

High-level and low-level design documents, diagrams and naming standards are what allow a network to outlive the people who built it.
