Finding Botnet-Infected Devices on Your Network

A botnet is a network of compromised devices — computers, routers, cameras and other IoT equipment — controlled remotely by attackers. Infected devices send spam, launch DDoS attacks and steal data, often without their owners noticing anything beyond a slower connection.

Why it matters to you

For enterprises, a single infected device can be the foothold for a larger breach. For ISPs, infected subscribers generate abuse complaints, blacklisting and wasted bandwidth.

Detection signals

  • Command-and-control traffic: connections to IPs and domains listed in threat-intelligence feeds.
  • DNS patterns: lookups of algorithmically generated domains or known malicious hosts.
  • Behaviour: scanning, unusual outbound SMTP, or sudden spikes in connections.
  • Timing: regular “beaconing” at fixed intervals.

From detection to remediation

  1. Correlate the alert to a device, user or subscriber.
  2. Contain: block C2 destinations, quarantine the device or place it in a walled garden.
  3. Notify the owner with clear cleanup instructions.
  4. Verify the infection has stopped before restoring full access.

IoT deserves special attention

Cameras, DVRs and home routers with default passwords are frequent botnet recruits. Segmenting them and changing default credentials removes much of the risk.
