Handling IP Abuse Reports: A Guide for ISPs and Hosting Providers
If you operate an ISP, data centre or hosting platform, abuse reports will arrive: spam, brute-force attempts, phishing pages, malware or scanning traced back to your address space. How quickly and consistently you respond determines whether your IP ranges stay clean and reputable.
Why it matters
Unresolved abuse leads to blacklisting. Once your ranges appear on major blocklists, legitimate customers find their emails rejected and services blocked — a commercial problem, not only a technical one.
A workable abuse process
- Publish contacts: keep accurate abuse contacts in your regional internet registry records.
- Intake: route reports into a ticketing system, parsing standard formats automatically where possible.
- Attribution: map the IP and timestamp to a customer using IPAM, RADIUS and NAT logs.
- Action: notify, rate-limit, quarantine or suspend according to a published policy.
- Delisting: once resolved, request removal from blocklists with evidence of remediation.
Prevention
- Monitor blocklists for your ranges continuously.
- Block outbound SMTP from residential ranges by default.
- Use flow analysis to detect scanning and botnet activity early.
