IT Security for Growing Indian Businesses: Where to Start

IT Security for Growing Indian Businesses: Where to Start

Most organisations do not set out to be insecure. They simply grow faster than their security practices. A team of ten becomes a team of a hundred, new cloud tools appear every quarter, and the shared admin password from year one is still in use. IT security is about closing that gap in a deliberate, layered way.

Start with what you have

You cannot protect assets you do not know about. Begin with an inventory of laptops, servers, network devices, cloud subscriptions and the data each one holds. This single exercise usually reveals unmanaged devices, former employees with active accounts and services exposed to the internet that nobody remembers setting up.

The layers that matter most

  • Identity: enforce multi-factor authentication on email, VPN and admin consoles first — it stops the majority of account-takeover attempts.
  • Endpoints: deploy managed endpoint protection with central visibility, and keep operating systems patched on a fixed schedule.
  • Email: filter phishing and malicious attachments at the gateway, and configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC for your domain.
  • Network: segment critical systems, restrict administrative access and log everything that crosses the perimeter.
  • Backups: keep at least one offline or immutable copy, and test restores — an untested backup is only a hope.

Plan for incidents, not just prevention

In India, CERT-In directions require organisations to report specified cyber incidents within six hours of noticing them. That is only realistic if roles, contacts and logs are ready before anything goes wrong. A short, rehearsed incident response plan is one of the highest-value documents a company can own.

Make it a programme, not a project

Security is never finished. Quarterly reviews of access rights, monthly patch reporting and an annual assessment keep the programme aligned with how the business actually changes.
