Network Segmentation: The Most Underrated Security Control

Network Segmentation: The Most Underrated Security Control

In many breach investigations the initial entry point is unremarkable — a phished laptop or an exposed remote-access service. What makes the incident severe is what happens next: the attacker moves freely across a flat network until they reach servers, backups and finance systems. Segmentation is the control that stops that movement.

What segmentation actually means

Segmentation divides a network into zones — users, servers, guest Wi-Fi, CCTV, building systems, payment environments — and allows only the traffic each zone genuinely needs. A camera never needs to talk to the accounts server; a guest phone never needs to reach a domain controller.

A phased approach

  1. Map flows: use firewall and flow logs to understand which systems actually communicate.
  2. Define zones: group assets by function and sensitivity, using VLANs and firewall interfaces.
  3. Start permissive, then tighten: log inter-zone traffic first, then convert observed legitimate flows into explicit allow rules.
  4. Protect management access: put switch, firewall and server management on a dedicated, restricted network.

Where zero trust fits

Zero trust extends the same idea to users and applications: no device is trusted just because it sits inside the office. Identity-aware access, device posture checks and per-application policies build naturally on a well-segmented network.

Common pitfalls

  • “Any-any” rules added during troubleshooting and never removed.
  • IoT and CCTV devices placed on the corporate VLAN.
  • No logging on internal firewall rules, so nobody notices abuse.
