Software-Defined Networking for the Modern Data Centre
Data-centre networks used to be built as three tiers of switches running spanning tree, configured box by box. Software-defined networking replaces that with a fabric that is simpler to scale, easier to segment and controlled centrally.
Leaf-spine fabric
Every leaf switch (where servers connect) links to every spine switch. Any server is the same number of hops from any other, bandwidth scales by adding spines, and all links are active — no blocked paths.
EVPN-VXLAN overlay
VXLAN carries Layer 2 segments over a routed Layer 3 underlay, and EVPN distributes the information about which hosts are where. Together they allow thousands of isolated segments and workloads that can move anywhere in the fabric.
The controller
A central controller or management platform holds the intended state — which tenants exist, which segments they own, which policies apply — and programs the switches. Changes become a single, validated operation instead of dozens of manual edits.
Micro-segmentation
Policy can be applied between workloads inside the data centre, not just at the perimeter, limiting how far an attacker can move after a breach.
Automation
With APIs and infrastructure-as-code, network changes can follow the same review and deployment pipeline as application code — faster, consistent and auditable.
