What Is IP Transit and How Do You Choose a Provider?

IP transit is the service that carries your traffic to — and receives traffic from — every other network on the internet. If you are an ISP, data centre, hosting company or an enterprise with your own AS number, your transit providers are the foundation of everything your users experience.

How transit works

You establish a BGP session with the transit provider. You announce your IP prefixes to them; they announce your prefixes to the rest of the internet and send you either the full internet routing table or a default route.

What to compare

  • Upstream mix: which global carriers and Indian networks the provider connects to, and how many.
  • Latency: to the destinations your users care about — domestic content, cloud regions, international sites.
  • IPv6: native dual-stack support, not an afterthought.
  • Route hygiene: RPKI route-origin validation and strict prefix filtering protect you from hijacks and leaks.
  • DDoS protection: detection and mitigation options, and how quickly they engage.
  • Billing: committed rate versus burstable billing at the 95th percentile.

Single-homed or multi-homed?

With your own AS number and IP space, buying transit from two or more providers gives you redundancy and lets you steer traffic. Even with one provider, ask for two sessions on diverse routers.

Before going live

Make sure your IRR route objects and RPKI ROAs are correct — many providers build filters from them, and incorrect records are a common cause of partial reachability.

Ubixe Infotech provides IP transit with RPKI-validated routing and diverse upstreams. See our Transit service or ask for a quote. You can also check your prefixes with our free BGP Security Check tool.
