Ground-Based Towers: From Site Acquisition to Tenancy
Ground-based towers (GBTs) remain the backbone of wide-area mobile coverage, especially along highways, in semi-urban areas and across rural India. Building one is a multi-disciplinary project that spans land, legal, civil, electrical and radio work.
The tower lifecycle
- Site acquisition: identifying land that meets the operator’s search ring, and agreeing a lease with the owner.
- Approvals: local authority permissions and other clearances as required.
- Soil testing and design: foundation and tower design for height, wind zone and tenant load.
- Civil work: foundations, fencing, shelter or outdoor cabinet plinths.
- Erection: tower assembly, earthing, lightning arrestors and aviation lighting.
- Power: grid connection, DG set, batteries and increasingly solar hybrid systems.
- Handover and tenancy: commissioning and onboarding of the first and subsequent operators.
Operations and maintenance
A tower’s value depends on uptime. Preventive maintenance, fuel and power management, security and quick fault response keep tenants satisfied for the life of the site.
Designing for multiple tenants
Planning space, structural capacity and power for additional operators from day one turns a single-tenant asset into a shared, more economical one.
