In-Building Solutions (IBS): Fixing Poor Indoor Mobile Coverage
Most mobile traffic now originates indoors, yet modern buildings are hostile to radio signals. Energy-efficient glass, concrete cores and basements weaken signals from outdoor towers, leaving offices, malls, hospitals and car parks with dropped calls and slow data.
What an IBS does
An in-building solution brings the mobile network inside. Operator signals are fed into a distributed antenna system (DAS) that spreads coverage evenly through floors, lifts, basements and stairwells.
Passive and active DAS
- Passive DAS uses coaxial cable, splitters and antennas — economical for small and mid-sized buildings.
- Active DAS converts signals to optical fibre and back, suiting large or tall buildings and multiple bands.
Why a neutral-host IBS is best
Occupants use every operator. A multi-operator, multi-band system serves all of them through one set of antennas, avoiding several separate installations in the same ceilings.
The process
- Walk-test survey to measure existing coverage.
- RF design with antenna locations and link budgets.
- Coordination with operators for signal sources and approvals.
- Installation, integration and post-installation KPI testing.
Plan it early
For new construction, reserving riser space and cable routes at the design stage greatly reduces cost.
