Network Access Control: Knowing Every Device on Your LAN
Ask most organisations how many devices are on their network and the honest answer is “we are not sure”. Network Access Control (NAC) answers that question and decides what each device is allowed to reach.
What NAC does
- Identifies every device that connects — wired, wireless or VPN.
- Authenticates users and devices, typically with 802.1X and certificates.
- Profiles devices that cannot authenticate (printers, cameras, sensors) by behaviour and fingerprint.
- Assigns access by placing each device in the right VLAN or applying a policy.
- Checks posture: is the laptop patched and running endpoint protection?
Why it matters now
IoT and building systems have multiplied the number of devices that cannot run security software. NAC keeps a smart TV or a CCTV camera in its own segment, away from finance servers.
Rolling it out without disruption
- Start in monitor mode: discover and classify devices without blocking anything.
- Build policies from what you observe.
- Enforce on one site or floor first, then expand.
- Keep a clear process for onboarding new device types.
We plan and deploy NAC as part of our Network Security service. Request a device-visibility assessment.
