Outdoor Small Cells (ODSC): Adding Capacity Where Users Are
Macro towers provide wide coverage, but in busy markets, transport hubs and dense residential areas a single macro sector cannot serve everyone. Outdoor small cells (ODSC) add capacity close to users, offloading traffic and improving speeds.
What is an outdoor small cell?
A compact, low-power radio — typically mounted on a street pole, building façade or rooftop — covering a radius of tens to a few hundred metres. Because each cell serves fewer users, everyone gets more capacity.
Where they make sense
- Markets, high streets and commercial districts.
- Railway and metro stations, bus terminals.
- Campuses, stadiums and event venues.
- Coverage gaps between macro sites.
What deployment involves
- Site identification: using traffic data to find hotspots.
- Permissions: approvals from municipalities or property owners under applicable right-of-way rules.
- Power: reliable metered power at each pole.
- Backhaul: fibre where possible, or microwave/E-band links.
- Installation and integration: mounting, cabling and commissioning with the operator.
Shared small cells
Neutral-host poles that support multiple operators reduce street clutter and cost — an increasingly important model as 5G densification continues.
Ubixe Infotech deploys and maintains outdoor small cell sites. See our Outdoor Small Cell service or plan your deployment.
