Structural Audits for Roof-Top Telecom Sites
Roof-top telecom sites add weight and wind load to buildings that were designed for other purposes. Over time, extra antennas, corrosion and building changes can push a structure beyond safe limits. Regular structural audits catch problems before they become dangerous.
When an audit is needed
- Before adding new antennas, radios or another operator
- Periodically — commonly every few years
- After storms, earthquakes or building alterations
- When corrosion or cracking is noticed
What a good audit covers
- Building assessment: roof slab, beams and columns supporting the structure.
- Tower or pole condition: members, bolts, welds and foundations or base frames.
- Loading analysis: current and proposed equipment against design capacity, including wind load.
- Corrosion and coating condition.
- Earthing and lightning protection.
- Safety access: ladders, fall-arrest points and railings.
After the audit
The report should give a clear verdict — safe, safe with conditions, or unsafe — with recommended strengthening, and the capacity available for future equipment.
