Telecom Site Power: Diesel, Batteries and Solar Hybrids

Telecom Site Power: Diesel, Batteries and Solar Hybrids

A telecom site must stay powered through grid outages that, in some areas, last many hours a day. Traditionally that meant diesel generators running for long periods — expensive, polluting and maintenance-heavy.

The building blocks

  • Grid supply where available.
  • Batteries — increasingly lithium-ion, which tolerate frequent cycling and higher temperatures better than lead-acid.
  • Diesel generator as the last resort.
  • Solar panels where space and sunlight allow.
  • Smart controllers that decide which source to use.

How hybrid systems save fuel

Instead of running a generator for the full length of an outage, the controller runs it briefly at efficient load to charge batteries, then switches it off and runs the site on batteries. Solar reduces generator hours further.

Other efficiency gains

  1. Outdoor cabinets and free cooling instead of air-conditioned shelters.
  2. Efficient rectifiers.
  3. Remote monitoring of fuel, battery health and power consumption to catch theft and faults.

Measuring results

Track diesel litres per site per month, generator run hours and outages caused by power. Hybrid conversions usually pay back through fuel and maintenance savings.
